Chapter Nineteen
Amie
Deep down in parts of me I didnât want to think about, I thought after that trip, maybe things would get easier. Maybe they would make more sense or put things into perspective for me. Truthfully, things only got way more complicated and entirely more confusing.
Panic flared in my chest as we pulled up to the house, as nearly everyone sat around the picnic tables watching us as the cab rolled to a stop. I didnât know how to act, I mean, Iâd just professed my love to Gabe and as we held hands walking towards the little shack we called our room, I didnât know how I was supposed to greet Michael.
Everyone watched us as we approached with a million questions brewing behind their eyes. I wanted to crawl under a rock and hide to avoid the scrutiny, and just as I was about to make a mad dash for it, Michael came bursting out of our room and ran towards us. Wasting no time on saying hello, he picked me up and spun me around in a giant bear hug, when he sat me back down on my feet, he kissed me full on the mouth in front of everyone.
âI missed you, baby,â he grinned with uncontrollable excitement.
At first, I was confused. I thought maybe it was a passive-aggressive male thing towards Gabe, putting on a display like that and claiming ownership in front of everyone. But then he let go of me to hug Gabe, and he asked him how our trip was. I had the slow realization that it wasnât for show. He really did miss me, he really did miss Gabe.
Michael carried our luggage back to the room, and I gabbed on and on about the beach and shopping until we closed the door behind us. Gabe plopped down on the bed, stretching out while Michael sat down on the edge of it while I just kept babbling on and on.
âOh, and I got you something,â I beamed with excitement.
âYou did?â he asked, his face lighting up with a big, boyish grin. The one that always made me melt.
Unzipping the luggage I dug through the shopping bags, trying to find a small black one that held his gift. As soon as I found it, I started smiling as I fished out a tan silk pouch and turned to face him. Michael reached out and cupped my bottom, pulling me between his legs and smiling up at me. Gabe just shook his head and laughed at how giddy Michael seemed for us to be back. With the black leather string gripped between my fingers, I dangled the pendant in front of him.
Reaching up with his fingers he toyed with the pendant to look at each side. One a beautifully carved wood and silver mask, and the other a small silver skeletal figure perched inside the mask so that it looked like he were in a boat.
âWoah,â his forehead pinched together as he took it from my hands to inspect it more closely.
